Whakatairanga te reo – Whakatairanga te kupu – Whakatairanga te tangata

Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Te Orini ki Ngati Awa (Te Orini) is located at 33 Meadow Vale, Coastlands Whakatane 3120.

The Kura currently caters for students from year one through to year thirteen and is open to all Kohanga Reo graduates and those tamariki with reasonable fluency in Te Reo Maori.
Kura Kaupapa Maori such as Te Orini are a natural and logical progression for graduates of Kohanga Reo.

A primary focus of Kura Kaupapa Maori is the continuing development of the Maori language of our tamariki.
Extensive research prior to the establishment of Kura Kaupapa Maori has shown total immersion has proved to be significantly more effective in advancing language competence than other methods.

Kura Kaupapa Maori such as Te Orini affirm that total immersion most rapidly develops language competence and assert that the language of kura Te Orini has an emphasis on Ngati Awatanga and follows the teaching/learning system enshrined in the foundation document for Kura Kaupapa Maori, “Te Aho Matua o nga Kura Kaupapa Maori”, developed by Dr. Pita Sharples and Dr. Katarina Mataira which in part affirms;be for the most part, exclusively Maori.
The Kura also agree that the appropriate time for the introduction of English is a matter for the kura whanau to decide, as a general rule, when children are reading and writing competently in Maori, and children indicate an interest in English.

  • respect all languages.
  • expect full competency in Maori and English for the children of their kura.
  • insist that legislation for the Maori language is worthless without a total commitment to everyday usage of Maori.
  • affirm that total immersion most rapidly develops language competence and assert that the language of the kura be, for the most part, exclusively Maori.
  • accept that there is an appropriate time for the introduction of English at which time there shall be a separate English language teacher and a separate English learning facility.
  • Meet all requirements of the National Curriculum.
